New Law Protects Against Moving Scams in Florida
A new consumer protection law has been enacted in Florida, aimed at safeguarding residents from deceptive practices in the moving industry. Effective July 1, the updated provisions under Chapter 507 of the Florida Statutes introduce stringent measures to ensure transparency and accountability among movers and moving brokers operating within the state.
Key highlights of the new law include mandatory registration for all movers and moving brokers with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. This registration requirement ensures that these entities undergo proper vetting and authorization to operate, thereby enhancing consumer confidence.
Additionally, the law mandates enhanced transparency in contractual agreements. Movers are now obligated to provide detailed estimates and contracts to customers, outlining all potential costs, dates, and terms upfront. Moving brokers are prohibited from offering contracts that include estimated moving costs, ensuring clarity and fairness in transactions.
Advertising guidelines have also been reinforced to prevent misleading claims about moving services. Companies must disclose their registration status in all advertising materials to provide consumers with accurate information.
Furthermore, the law introduces stricter penalties, including fines up to $50,000 and potential felony charges, for movers who fail to comply with lawful orders to return a customer’s household goods. This measure aims to deter unlawful practices and protect consumers from financial harm.
Attorney General Ashley Moody emphasized the importance of these reforms in light of increasing reports of moving scams affecting Florida residents. The Attorney General’s office has already taken action against over 18 movers and moving brokers accused of defrauding consumers, underscoring the urgency and necessity of these new protections.

This online guide offers valuable information and tips, including checking licensing for interstate and intrastate movers, reading contract documents thoroughly, and safeguarding personal belongings during the moving process.
